DIY Curtains for a China Hutch

Adding curtains to a China hutch is an easy way to soften the look of your display and add a touch of charm to your dining or kitchen area. Curtains can hide shelves that are full of everyday dishes or collectibles while still allowing you to showcase your favorite pieces when you like. With a little planning and simple sewing, you can make custom panels that fit your hutch perfectly and bring a warm, homey feel to the room.

Before you begin, it’s helpful to plan out exactly how much fabric you’ll need for your project. If your hutch has multiple sections or panels of different sizes, a quick sketch or diagram can make calculating yardage much easier. Washing and drying the fabric before cutting ensures that your curtains won’t shrink later, keeping your panels the perfect size.

Measuring carefully is key to achieving a professional look. Add seam allowance and extra length for rod pockets at both the top and bottom of each panel to make threading the yarn easier later. Doubling the width of each panel gives a nice, full curtain that drapes beautifully across each hutch section, even if some panels are smaller or narrower than others.

DIY China Hutch Curtains Tutorial

Equipment & Supplies

  • Sewing machine
  • Coordinating thread
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • 4 screws per panel
  • Drill
  • Yarn
  • Safety pin

Step 1: Measure and Cut Fabric

  1. Determine the height of each panel by measuring from about an inch above the glass pane (or window area) and adding 2 inches for seam allowance and rod pocket.
  2. Measure the width of each panel and double it to allow for fullness.
  3. Mark and cut your fabric for each panel, remembering to account for any panels that are different sizes.

Step 2: Hem the Panels

  1. Hem the sides by double folding under about ¼ inch, and sewing.
  2. For the top and bottom, fold the edge over ¼ inch and sew, then fold down again ¾ inch and sew to create a rod pocket.
  3. Repeat for all panels so each one has a finished top, bottom, and sides.

Step 3: Prepare Yarn for Hanging

  1. Cut two pieces of yarn for each panel, making them extra long so you have room to tie and adjust.
  2. Thread a safety pin onto one end of the yarn and feed it through the top rod pocket. Repeat for the bottom pocket.

Step 4: Install Screws

  1. Using a drill, install 4 screws for each panel inside the hutch doors or sections — about ¼ inch away and 1 inch above (or below for bottom panels) the glass pane.
  2. Do not screw them all the way in; leave about ¼ inch of the screw head exposed so you can tie the yarn around it.

Step 5: Hang the Curtains

  1. Make sure the front of each panel faces outward.
  2. Tie the yarn from the top pocket to one screw using a secure double knot.
  3. Pull the other end of the yarn taut, wrap it around the opposite screw head several times, and double knot.
  4. Repeat for the bottom pocket and continue with each panel until all curtains are attached.
  5. Trim excess yarn as needed after all panels are secured.

Final Thoughts!

These DIY China hutch curtains create a polished, custom look without permanent changes to your furniture. You can mix and match fabrics to reflect seasonal decor or change them out when you want a fresh look. The soft folds and tidy rod pockets give a professional touch while still being completely functional and adjustable.
